Eduardo Augustine is a painter from Colón, Panamá, with more than thirty-five years dedicated to the visual arts. Born in 1956 in the province of Bocas del Toro, he moved to Colón, where he went to school and began his career.
He earned a precision-mechanic certificate in 1975, then turned to art. He studied at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas in 1978 and, in 1979, took a course at the Escuela de San Fernando in Madrid. On that first trip to Spain he visited the Museo del Prado almost daily, and he has named El Greco, Rubens, Velázquez and Goya among his inspirations.
He works in many techniques and is best known for his acrylics. In 1981 he won the First National Painting Contest of Panama, and he later received a First Honorable Mention at the Arte Gulf competition.
His subject is Panama’s past: the streets and old wooden houses of Colón, weathered walls, everyday scenes, and the music and musicians of earlier generations. In 2019 he presented 41 works in the exhibitions Volver al pasado and Homenaje at Galería Juan Manuel Cedeño in Las Bóvedas, Panama City. The Homenaje series pays tribute to the painters Chong Neto, Alfredo Sinclair and Guillermo Trujillo. He has also taught at the Universidad de Panamá.
